The hail was accompanied by lots of rain (.81 inches in gauge), and melted quickly on the ground. It came in two waves during the described 30-minute period, with the largest hail falling just at the end of the first 15 minute wave. The smaller hail fell steadily during the first wave, but as the first wave began tapering off the largest hail then began falling irregularly and at longer intervals--hitting objects like thrown rocks. So, while overall the hail did not shred leaves, the largest pieces did cause some dimpling of car roofs. Ten minutes later the second wave came with pea-sized hail, which this time started just before the rain joined in, and this mix of rain and hail lasted about 5 more minutes. Note that the largest hail was mottled white, but as it melted it revealed a clear core.
Sorry, no hail pad. This is my first hail report, inspired by the size of the hail, larger than I've ever seen during 3 decades in Dinosaur. |
