Lightning at 11:30:33 pm AKDT. Hail started within a couple minutes of the lightning, mixed in with moderate to heavy rain. The hail came in bursts, with most of it being 0.2” or smaller in diameter. Some pieces and some of the dents on the hail pad were 0.25” to 0.3” inches diameter. I found one piece that was 0.4” in diameter, however it was a conglomerate and I am not sure if it fell that way or if the pieces froze together after reaching the ground. I was able to move the piece to measure it without it breaking apart, so I am inclined to say it fell fused together.
For the photo of the hail pad, north is the top of the photo. There was a plastic snowboard weighing down the south side of the pad and a small piece of 4x4 on the north end, which is why there are no hail marks on those sections. Exciting weather for Alaska! |
