Notes: Still a further update: employees at the Reading Hospital in West Reading reported baseball size hail which pounded roofs so forcefully that it fractured underlying ceilings, dropping ceiling debris into the rooms below. The Reading Hospital is located 1 mile SW of Center City Reading or a quarter mile NW from CoCoRaHS station PA-BR-8, Reading 1.2 SW. This is a further update to the previously submitted hail report the previous day. Severe thunderstorm and hail narrowly missed Reading 3.5 SW. But according to local radio announcement, press reports, and other area CoCoRaHS reports hail damage was heavy in vicinities of Berkshire Mall and Broadcasting Square which are located 2 to 3 miles N of here. Widespread car and building window breakage was reported. Quarter size hail was reported one mile NE of here. The Reading Eagle newspaper has much information on their web site www.readingeagle.com which shows several pictures from or near downtown Reading. One shows hail about golf ball size, perhaps a bit larger. Another shows ground covered up to a few inches in spots, similar to hail pictures from Denver CO yesterday. Other pictures showed trees almost completely stripped of their leaves. According to press report, hail accumulated 3 to 4 inches on U.S. Route 222 between Routes 422 and 183. PennDot dispatched snowplows to clear this and other stretches. This stretch is 1 mile SW to SE of the Reading Airport (KRDG). Some residents were shoveling the hail from their walkways. The corridor from the Reading Airport to Center City really got bombarded with hail of hen egg size to maybe tennis ball size and accumulating up to 4 inches.
