One direct hit with three near-misses by the German Luftwaffe sank the freighter over a 24-hour span but there were no deaths. Clear skies may have made TCOJ and other neighboring ships easy targets. Christened in 1920, the ship was a slow-moving (11 knots peak) freighter and had been in a convoy headed to Murmansk (USSR) as part of war-time lend-lease. With the tremendous battle of Stalingrad about to begin, the 1942 aerial bombing was one of many regular attacks on Allied maritime trade. Almost exactly two years later, the SS Joliet Victory was launched and participated in vital landings (Iwo Jima, Leyte, and Lingayen Gulf among others) and survived the war. NNNN
