Notes
Though high wind alert predicted around 11 am, winds did not begin until midafternoon. Sunny, pleasant morning, high mid 60s. Dark heavy shelf clouds formed around 2 pm and high winds began about 345 pm Winds were unbelievably fierce til about 330 am. Sounded like freight trains. Unsure of wind speed or gusts in Longmont but similar to experience in Japan where wind speed reached 70 mph. Just read wind speeds reached 109 at NCAR in Boulder just a few miles from here. Cooler today- 49 but warmer temps ahead and another high wind alert for Friday. Though EXCEL Energy planned to shut down power for many counties along the Front Range, here in Longmont we have buried lines - what a gift. At least 200,000 people lost power from the winds and unsure how many EXCEL energy shut down power in advance of the storm.
