Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: NM-SN-45
Station Name: Placitas 3.8 ENE
Report Date: 11/30/2020
Submitted: 11/30/2020 7:56 AM
Scale Bar: Severely Dry
Description:
Drought, drought, drought continues to characterize every month this year. Far less than an inch per month of total precip. has been overwhelmed with far greater than an inch per month of evaporation, resulting in a negative net soil moisture level. Every month we keep subtracting from zero to get our net precip., to the point where getting back to zero would be an improvement!
Agriculture will be significantly impacted again next year without adequate snow pack this winter. Already we're off to a poor start with little snow in Oct./Nov. Ski areas have not had enough snow to open, let alone the COVID 19 restrictions which keep them closed. So even cross-country and snowshoeing recreation have not happened yet. This puts a strain on public health too as every lack of COVID 19 safe forms of recreation does. This pushes more people into trails, parks and other outdoor recreation areas that are open.
Fire danger has barely eased up as fuel moisture levels have not eased up that much, wind and dryness continue, and the only factor keeping Red Flag warnings at bay has been the lower temperatures.
Native trees such as Pinon Pine continue to stress and die from the drought, and ground cover is non existent where native grasses and forbs have been grazed off.
The lack of rabbits from the drought may be the only thing curbing the spread of Rabbit Hemorragic Disease, RHD, which jumped from domestic to wild rabbit populations in the SW including NM.
