6.79” of rain last week. Wow! Six of seven days had measurable precipitation - the last four were from one continuous system (former Hurricane Polo) with nothing severe, just a nice gentle rain that put a dent in our drought situation. This is more rain than the entire months of April or June which were our rainiest months this year. 0.76” of Evapotranspiration. Much less than it’s been for weeks due to the rain and cooler temperatures. Temperatures were trending downward, before the rain event, and were below normal during the rain. Afternoon highs ranged from 94 degrees F to 72 degrees, morning lows stayed in the 70s except one morning was 68 degrees, such a relief. Upgraded to D2 (Severe) Drought Status just before the real rain started. The ground soil is still not saturated even after all that rain - that is why I selected Mildly Dry. We were a little over half way with the rainfall total and I could walk in my yard and not even get my shoes dirty. Two days later (yesterday) I woke up to my yard flooded in low areas. Yesterday evening driving around my area there was standing water only in ditches and low lying areas and noticeably in construction areas. Many of the cracks in my yard are either gone or shrank but they are not completely gone. I walked around my yard today and it has soaked in with no dirty shoes again. Included with this report, I’m submitting my monthly “crack” photo - you can see the improvement. In sum, very beneficial rain but not enough to pull us out of drought conditions, especially with no rain in the two-week forecast. As of this morning we are, in fact, still under a Burn Ban but with a Low Fire Danger. I haven’t noticed a difference with plants and trees but I imagine they are happy with the big drink. Can’t confirm yet but I imagine this is going to cause us to have to mow again before end of season. Obviously no supplemental watering needed. Not a lot of wildlife activity with the rain around but things seemed back to normal today with the bees and dragonflies. I spent about 30 minutes this morning with my binoculars watching two Red-tailed Hawks on our property talking about something - guess they resolved whatever it was as it’s quiet now. Saw a partial rainbow on Wednesday and submitted an Optics Report. Story for the week - Rain! And cooler temps! Feels a little more like Fall finally. Month of September wrap up - 1.07” of rain. 7.43” of Evapotranspiration. Hottest September on record - temps ranged from coolest morning low of 64 degrees to warmest afternoon high of 101. Nine days of 100 degrees or more with an additional thirteen days above 95. Story for the month - an extra 30 days of August. Happy New Water Year!
