With only 0.40” of rain in the past week, and all of that falling yesterday (Sat Oct 3) and early today (Sun Oct 4), York County, South Carolina remains in a “Moderately Dry” condition. The U.S. Drought Monitor map concurs with a D1-Moderate Drought Intensity, although points just west of my location are at a D0-Abnormally Dry Intensity. Despite well over 3” of rain from the previous week, the drought intensities did not drift that much. The lawn has greened up some, but with little growth. Leaf drop from heat/drought stress — which has been ongoing since mid-August — continues, while some tree species are just beginning to show some fall color. Area lakes remain roughly 3-4 feet below normal. Rainfall year-to-date is 7.37” below normal. Compared to last year, rainfall is down 10.75”.
