Rain last Sunday and again this weekend along with cooler autumn temperatures have kept the fields and forests well watered and the rivers and streams flowing at or above normal levels. Lions mane, puffball, and white coral mushrooms and Indian pipes are sprouting in the woods. Goldenrod and Joe-Pye Weed have mostly gone to seed while purple aster continues to flower. Milkweed seed pods are beginning to burst. The local orchards are harvesting a good apple crop. Lawns continue green and growing. The garden season is winding down and soil remains wet. I harvested a good crop of winter squash. Hiking and biking trails on Mt Greylock are damp and wet at the higher elevations. Fall colors remain muted and some sugar maples are dropping brown leaves.
