Our first week of autumn concludes with near normal conditions, an abrupt change from the rainy patter of the previous week. This week began with a soggy Sunday that left 0.90 inches of rain in the gauge catch; this was also our weekly precipitation total. Lawns are still green and needing regular mowings and soils have not dried out yet. This has probably been aided by moderate daytime temperatures and high humidities most of the week with overnight temperatures dipping into the low 40s. Larger deciduous trees are just now showing signs of fading and a little bit of vibrant color is appearing on a few trees. Corn is turning brown and prairie grasses are becoming golden. Outdoor recreation continues and agricultural activity is vibrant and we’re now in the peak of apple season. It is definitely feeling more like autumn.
