We have had regular instances of rain during September. The drought monitor for our state indicates we are still in moderate drought conditions. While digging weeds (or pulling plants) the soil is merely damp, with drier soil underneath. We're expecting rainy days for most of this week.
We are finally seeing the Wooly Kate tomatoes ripening! They are golf ball-sized, kind of meaty-tasting fruits. I have started some snow peas in the raised beds and will be sowing some speckled Bibb lettuce (a cold-hardy variety). The zinnias that were direct-sown are blooming regularly. The Asters (Wood and New England) are flowering and drawing all sorts of pollinators.
The crickets are very loud in the mornings, and the robins and other birds are quite busy at sunup and sundown, checking the ground for grubs and seeds or chasing each other.
