Sept 9 - 16, 2026: no measurable precipitation. Cooler temps during day and night now. Not watering yard areas as much as earlier in the summer, but areas under mature, large trees still need more frequent water. Acorns are falling from the oaks but are nearly done. That's very early for oak tree acorn drops. The horse chestnut tree is dropping a few seed balls. The tree is loaded with the large, bright green, sharply spiked seed balls. Might have to put a BEWARE FALLING CHESTNUT BALLS sign along the front sidewalk. Anna's hummingbirds are definitely using the sugar water feeders. In the cooler weather, the feeders are being refilled every other day and are not in the direct sunlight. Upper Boise River reservoirs are being rapidly drawn down. Bears are coming down into urban areas searching for food because the summer drought and heat and/or large wildfires dried up much of their food sources at higher elevations.
