Weekly precipitation was zero. Over the past 42 days this station has recorded 1.88 inches. We have been in a hot stretch for over 3 weeks now too. Since August 12th the average high temperature has been just over 98 degrees with several 100 degree plus days. As a result, it is getting rather dry. The big rain that came on August 26th (almost all the reported rain over the past 42 days fell this day) has been used up and vegetation is beginning to look parched again. Our irrigated fields are still rather moist. This is due to the fact that they were watered during the growing season and then the rain on August 26th has not been used by the plants because they had been defoliated or harvested already. Also, the remaining plant residue acts like a mulch and keeps the sun from baking the ground. That being said, these irrigated fields have firmed up substantially since last week. We are nearing the halfway point in our harvest and continued hot and dry conditions are not a bother (other than all the sweating that goes on when working on equipment). Much better to have a heat spell during harvest than during the growing season. I selected "Mildly Dry" this week. Would probably have selected "Moderately Dry" if this weather was occurring during the growing season (by growing season I mean our commodity crops are through - I realize it is still very much the growing season here for natural vegetation).
