We have gotten extremely dry in the last four weeks. The constant 100 to 110-degree temperatures have dried things out and that’s been compounded by strong winds on many days. We’ve had numerous wildfires in the area and are in a burn ban. We have recorded only .19 inches of rain in August. Our Bermuda grass has been yellow for weeks and has lost all its moisture. It crunches like snow when you walk on it. The stock water on our ranch has decreased dramatically in the last few weeks. Our largest body of water is basically dry. Our second largest is critically low. Our smaller ponds have gone down significantly but are in better shape than the large ponds. The large ponds never had spring rains large enough to fill them and after a series of months of below-average rainfall, they are showing the effects. One major concern is our wheat crop. We plan to be planting in September but we have almost no moisture in the ground. It’s a risky situation because a small rain could make the wheat sprout but there is no sub-moisture to sustain it. The crop will be entirely reliant on rainfall after planting. Without that, it will be stressed or fail entirely. It could be a critical situation for the wheat crop if we don’t get substantial rainfall in September.
