Since last reported on 08/23/2026, recorded a total of 0.12" of gauge catch. August is about to end with a precipitation total of 0.89" so far. NOAA August normal precipitation is 2.65", and PRISM August normal is 3.67". That is about 30% average of normal precipitation. Most days in August were days with precipitation. However, 11 days had just trace amounts. We had plenty of days with monsoon thunderstorms. But thunderstorms tracked either north or south of our immediate area leaving us with a trace or under 0.05".

NOAA drought maps have us in D3 Extreme drought conditions. 63% of El Paso County is in this condition.  31% is under severe drought. The seasonal precipitation outlook is promising with above average precipitation through the end of November. 

Our grass was trying to make a comeback, but not enough precipitation has occurred, so the grass is going dormant again. Topsoil sample taken today shows dry dusty soil that is difficult to dig. Hummingbirds have departed for the season. Other birds are gathering for the migration south. Observed very young Cottontail in our pine trees. Some of our established Ponderosa Pines are showing signs of drought stress with needles turning yellow. Autumn-like clouds are forming including mountain wave clouds the past few days. Heard the Aspen Acres fire is now 82% contained. With very little precipitation this past week, and soil drying out, have revised the Condition Scale from Mildly Dry to Moderately Dry.
