With about one half inch of precipitation in the past week but slightly cooler temperatures, I'm going to go with Near Normal because the ground has been absorbing water well with almost no flooding. The ground has plenty of moisture, but nothing is "wet" or sopping. Potted plants have needed watering. It has been cool and humid in the past week-- not oppressive humidity but pervasive - everything feels just a little sticky.

For a few weeks now, some lilacs have been dropping leaves, which is very unusual as they usually drop very late in the season, sometimes with the first snow. Leaves have splotches of gray in the most shady parts (not the usual mildew). I'm guessing that it is a fungal infection similar in behavior but not in looks to the black tar fungus of maple tree leaves as the tree branches are mostly healthy.

In the garden, some annuals are "giving up" and going light green when they should be dark green at this time of year.  Late plantings barely grew at all this year. Folks are starting to blame the wet, cooler, and possibly cloudy summer, but I'm not yet fully in that club. It felt wetter, but other than that, I don't think anything was extreme.

Chestnuts are slowly growing. But some of my apple trees are almost 50% leafless now due to leaf drop. (Still a few more apples to drop).

Allergies have been lower. Water levels in rivers feel about normal (not low, not high) for late summer. It feels like we're ending summer before Labor Day this year. That's OK. I'm ready for a change.
