The effects of the heavy rain received at the end of July are finally starting to fade. The vernal pools that had been refilled are starting to dry out. Water levels in Bassett Brook and the Hoosic river have dropped but are still somewhat above normal for late summer. Lawns are green and growing fast without the usual August brown patches. Goldenrod, Joe Pye Weed, Milkweed and Queen Ann's Lace are abundant in the fields. Lots of mushrooms in the woods. Gardens are well watered and producing well. Hiking and biking trails on Mt Greylock still have multiple wet sections. Evenings are alive with the buzz and trill of late summer insects. Dawns are quieter with fewer birds defending their territories.
