In my horse and sheep pastures, the only green is knapweed and bindweed, both species also stressed this year (smaller plant size, shriveled leaves). The antelope, sheep, and horses are all eating the bindweed although average height of plants is 2". They will occasionally crop thd knapweed blossoms. In many places the perennial and annual grasses and forbs are so desiccated that the mulch of leaves and stems are blown away, creating areas of blowouts into bare dirt. Already starting to supplement feed which usually doesn't start until late fall. With the dry winter we had very little forb growth, and blooming perennials were scarce. Rangeland vegetation is just crunchy underfoot, many reservoirs and springs dried up, some elk from local herds already down on hay fields. Rain is spotty, and right here, tend to split and go around us. The lengthy above average temperatures have kept any moisture from doing us much good. Neighbors are culling cattle numbers and trying to find hay. Irrigation from the creek has been shut down, although localized flash flooding opened it back up for a bit.
