It is difficult to rate our conditions on the farm right now. We are in better shape than in 2022, 2023 or 2024, but we were brutally dry those years. We are not in as good of shape as 2025, but we had 20 inches of rain in about 30 days of spring that year. I am calling it near normal; but the intense heat is drying things out extremely fast. The biggest issue we have faced is the consistent lack of big rains. We have had some rainfall but have missed the bigger ones that some areas of the state have received. As a result, we are approximately 8 inches below our 30-year normal rainfall in the last 365 days. The heat seems to be affecting things faster. Our Bermuda grass has noticeably declined in the last 48 hours, with the temperature reaching 104 here today. It’s not unusual for our grass to go dormant in the hottest parts of summer, but the speed with which it has happened this week is unusual. On the stock water side of things, our small ponds are in good shape. They got filled up in spring. Our larger ponds are very low, because they never caught enough in spring to fill up. All of our rains since spring have been small amounts that kept the grass growing but didn’t produce runoff. As Julys go, this one has been a lot better than the more severe drought years. But we are tracking to have about half of our normal rainfall, which is about 2.5 inches, according to PRISM data. Right now, we are at 1.18 for the month.
