At this point there is an interesting contrast in surface moisture around the region. In the immediate Salt Lake City area where this station is located, it is exceptionally hot and dry (high temperatures have reached 100-108 some days) and is killing a lot of native vegetation. I have even had to water some hardy desert plants such as yuccas and agaves around my landscape. However, a few visits to some local mountains showed high variability.  There is some recent or ongoing tree kill due to drought in the Wasatch Range adjacent to the Salt Lake area, while another 20 to 50 miles east around the Uinta Range in northeastern Utah there has been heavy rainfall due to monsoon type thunderstorms over the past week. Parts of the Uintas are so wet that hiking is a bit difficult due to areas of standing water. Fire danger is extreme in the local area near SLC but is now much more moderate or even low in some of the surrounding region that has received recent rain.
