Conditions have improved somewhat over the past few weeks with several rain and thunderstorm events helping to "green" things up. Temperatures have been on the cool to chilly side over the past few days with overnight temps still dropping below freezing. Since my last condition report (5/25/26) we've received over 2 inches of precipitation and total since 1 January is now 5.28" although still under last years total for this period. Unfortunately, the winds have been intense and persistent and seem to dry things out before any rain has the chance to really soak in. Birds and wildlife have been more visible, antelope have been on the property in the sagebrush areas, multiple hawks and falcons have been working the fields around us. All our Bluebird/Swallow houses are now occupied with baby Bluebirds and Robins seemingly everywhere. We never seem to see baby swallows so we're thinking they emerge from the houses fully grown:-) No hummingbirds yet due to mostly cool temperatures. Local streams are still flowing well and recent snows in the Wind River Mountains have kept water flowing although many of the local lakes are still low. Trees are doing a bit better but still seem to be stressed. Temperature extremes over the past month have run from 80.9 degrees to a low of 24.0 with peak winds of 64 mph and one gust in the 80 mph range but not sure about the accuracy of that reading. We do have one forest fire currently burning in the local area (Kinky Creek Fire @ 880 acres as of yesterday) but it doesn't seem to have expanded much due to cool and rainy/snowy conditions in the mountains. Weather is forecast to remain somewhat cooler through the 4th of July weekend so hopefully things can stay green for a while longer before some of the summer heat and dryness moves back in.
