Since last reported on 06/14/2026, recorded a total of 0.93" of precipitation which includes Multi-Day reporting of 0.05" from 06/19/2026 to 06/23/2026. This brings the total precipitation for June at 1.46". NOAA Normal is 2.05" and PRISM Normal is 2.31". These numbers will likely be the total for June 2026 as the forecast calls for no chance of precipitation until 04 July. The precipitation event that made a huge difference was the heavy thunderstorm on 6/25 recorded on 6/26 as 0.60". We had heavy rain, but the soil soaked up most of it. Hail Reports were submitted. Thankfully, nothing damaged.
Topsoil sample taken around 9:00am this morning indicates dry soil at the surface and moist soil just below the surface down to the 4.0" level. The soil below the surface barely packs in my hands.
No wildfires in our immediate area. However, there was a damaging wildfire down by Colorado City, CO this past week and wildfire south of Rifle, CO. Did observe hazy skies this morning obscuring our view of Pikes Peak most likely from the wildfire smoke.
Wildlife activity seemed normal this week. Returning home from running an errand Friday in Colorado Springs, observed a bird of prey literally falling out of the sky to catch something in tall grass along Woodmen Road just east of I-25. It was amazing to witness. At first glance I thought it was a drone. Then I saw the feathers ruffling as it fell onto its prey. Obviously, you don't have to be in the wild to see such a spectacle.
With below average precipitation for June, good rains, and drying conditions now upon us, I will maintain a Mildly Dry Condition Scale.
