1.25” rain this past week (4.75” NOAA normal), so still calling it Moderately Dry due to the recent past’s deficit. SC Forestry app shows 16 wildfires across S.C. Even after our 1.25” rain this week almost all local roadside ditches are again dry or nearly so. Local roadside swamps are either dry again or nearly so. Local non-irrigated lawns did respond positively to the rain, but still haven’t fully recovered. Local fields/pastures have responded well to the recent rain, but some portions still show stunted growth. Some local retention ponds are already dry again. During last Saturday’s Poinsett State Park hike the mosquitos were swarming, even after applying bug spray (same at home). The park’s main spillway was running well again, but this was the morning after a decent rain. Will post an update after a couple days if the flow significantly decreases again. The park’s smaller tributaries have already ran dry. Shank’s Creek (the main stream through the park that feeds the park lake) is up about 3-4” from last week, but this was after a heavy rain the night before. Hart Creek (that feeds Shank’s Creek) appears to have been up a bit, but is now almost back down to the previous week’s level. Park leaf litter is wet underneath, but the underlying soil is only damp, so it appears that the ground is quickly absorbing the water. Quite a few birds, squirrels and lizards (anoles and skinks) active in the park and at home. Interesting to pick a condition this week, as the rain was up quite a bit from past weeks, but seems to be be absorbed very quickly. From Data Explorer: This past week total was 1.25” vs 4.75” NOAA normal. The monthly total was 1.80” (-1.68”/52% NOAA normal). Yearly total: 12.71” (-8.0”/61% NOAA normal). Last 30 days: 6.0” (NOAA normal: 8.31”). Last 90 days: 6.73” (NOAA normal: 15.01”).
