We are dryer than normal for this time of year. We have wheat bottoms that need to be plowed but are so dry the ground is cracking. With the increasing temperatures and strong winds, conditions have deteriorated noticeably in the last few weeks. Our ponds are declining and the grass on hilltops looks more like August than June. We have narrowly missed heavy rains in recent weeks and have only gotten showers that produce less than an inch. The most recent example of this was June 19. About five miles south of us had rainfall of greater than 2 inches and a flood warning was issued. We received .59 of rain the same day. The lower than normal spring rains follow an extremely dry fall and winter. That has created a situation that could become critical in July and August if we don’t get a good rain soon. The Ketchum Ranch Mesonet station is one mile south of our location. In the last 365 days, we have received 26.6 inches of rain at the Mesonet site. That’s 10 inches below normal.
