Near normal, emphasis on "near." We are trending toward dryness - more dust and the top 1/4 inch of any bare soil is completely dry. Soils under mulch, full shade, or groundcovers are still moist, though. I'm seeing signs of stress in a lot of non-native plants. The sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) are flowering despite being less than six inches tall. Several plants aren't growing at all. Yet my natives, including the spiderwort (Tradescantia canadensis) and Canadian anenome, are thriving. I am trusting the natives have a better sense of the line between "normal" and "dry" than I do currently! Berries are developing on the serviceberry bushes. Chenopodium album sprouted this week and is taking off. These are generally lovely early summer days...but the lack of rain in the forecast may pose problems if it continues.
