High temperatures were below to near normal this week; low temperatures were below normal. Yesterday and today's temperatures were substantially above normal with a high temp of 90 degrees here today. I received 1.37 inches of rain this week. The soil was moist early in the week but is drying out again. The soil is dry in the top 3 inches and slightly moist from 3 to 6 inches down (the depth of my hole). The trees and grass are showing signs of stress. Conditions are mildly dry. May precipitation is still below normal with only 3.08 inches of rain (0.85 inch below normal, 79 percent of normal). Precipitation here for the year is now 10.17 inches, which is 0.57 inch below normal (95 percent of normal). Precipitation for the water year is 2.07 inch below normal (87 percent of normal). Plants and wildlife. Bird visits to the bird bath are still numerous. Approximately 20 species of birds (about 100 to 120 birds visit each day). Water Supply Water level in Standing Bear Lake (approximately 0.2 mile to the east of here) is approximately 2 feet below normal. Area creeks and ponds are also below normal. Local farmers told me that the ground is too dry to plant crops.
