Thus far for my “Watershed,” that resides in the “Upper Passaic River” Watershed, that covers from 1.5 miles to the NW to about 1.5 miles to the SE and is about 1 mile in width and in the general shape of a diamond;
There were three days with measurable precipitation and zero days with trace precipitation for a total of 0.30”, the past seven days [Sunday-Saturday].
River and stream volume the past week of this CMR increased their rates of flow over small lake dams west of this station. As of Sunday afternoon, 5/24/2026; one increased its flow to 100% the width of the dam 6.5 miles from this station moving at a high volume, with observable turbidity. The other, 2 miles to the west, also increased its flow over its fall, covering about 80% of its respective fall and moving at a similar volume, with observable turbidity. The Madison Golf Course, adjacent this station also had observable play. The ground around this station is hydrated and soft to walk on. Grass and weeds required weekley maintenance. Rhododendron flowers have faded. Spanish Blue Bells bloomed on 5/1, began to fade on 5/19 and as of this report, entirely faded. The first Rose bloomed in the morning on 5/22 on Active Birds around this station included; House Finch, Cardinals, Mourning Doves and a friendly Crow, all were active. The Song Bird feeder was NOT refilled this week. The Thistle Feeder was filled Sunday April 26, 2026 for the first time. Since then and as of this report 9/10’s of an inch has been consumed. Additionally; the Hummingbird Feeder was filled for the first time on Mothers Day 5/10/2026 with a starting weight of 1111 grams including nectar and glass feeder and had (again) zero observable use.
Neighborhood squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits were also observed adjacent this station. Bumble Bees and hornets were observed working flowers around this station. Temperatures continued unseasonably cooler 80% this Spring, despite four days reaching 85+ degrees the past week.
Over the past 31 days; this station has captured and reported 3.26 inches of precipitation. There has been 55 days of precipitation the previous 142 days of CY2026 [1/1/2026 to 5/23/2026] for a “Calendar Year” [CY] total of
13.81”, compared to a total of 56 days of precipitation and a [CY] total of
20.62” the same [year to date] in CY2025. So far, compared to last year, this station has received 6.81” less precipitation than a year ago. Some other totals from previous years, for comparison, are;
YTD2024- 24.48”
YTD2023- 18.77”
YTD2022- 19.80”
YTD2021- 15.60”
YTD2020- 15.83”
YTD2019- 23.96”
YTD2018- 24.63”
YTD2017- 19.48”
YTD2016- 18.03”
YTD2015- 14.44” (First full Year)
The TWELVE year running average reported precipitation for this station is: 19.12 inches, holding this station at an increased deficit of 5.31” less then the 12 (CY) year average and CY2026 continues as the DRIEST year this CMR has been posted. Considering the twelve year annual comparable total for this station and considering the previous years total precipation, is why I believe that it is still appropriate to continue this week’s report on the “Mildly Dry” side of the Condition Scale Bar despite receiving over 1.60” the past 48 hours. This will be reported at next CMR on 5/31.
