Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: CO-LR-1238
Station Name: Fort Collins 6.5 NNW
Report Date: 5/21/2026
Submitted: 5/21/2026 7:59 AM
Scale Bar: Moderately Wet
Description:
The amount of moisture we’ve had since the end of April is significant. Plants have transformed from drought-stricken to green and lush. Pools of standing water remain in low areas and roadside pubbles where soil is compacted. It has been unusually cool, as well, thus helping to conserve the moisture. So I,s are well saturated, and some water bodies that looked very low have filled. Even the Poudre River is running much better than it had been in April with so little snowmelt runoff to feed it. Of note to me as a Birdwatcher has been the sudden influx of migratory birds s the rainstorms brought water. Until then, it had felt like Silent Spring, with at least some delay in migrant arrivals. I also suspect that the snow accumulations in the mountains t this crazy late date may have been driving some birds down in elevation. Despite all this good water from the sky, Our water company, ELCO, which gets water sourced from the West Slope Colorado River drainage, has issued voluntary watering restrictions to every other day. It seems the Colorado River drainage system isn’t being helped out of drought by all the storms we’re having on the East Slope, though quite a bit of snow has been falling on the Divide, so it is of at least some help to mitigate the generally moderate to exceptional drought we’ve been in throughout Colorado.
