Moderate rainfall began just after 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, and persisted for several hours. By 9:00 a.m., ponding had formed in my yard, with over two inches of rain falling in that time. Ditches overflowed and backed up into yards. While my lawn renovation project drained well, I still need to cut another drain into the state’s ditch-bank to allow excess water to run off my property. The state’s road construction project to add turn lanes was completed. Just before noon, another round of heavy rain occurred. What was expected to be more rain for Mother’s Day morning turned into a beautiful day with lower humidity and northerly breezes. The lawn is now saturated. More rain was predicted for Monday afternoon, but the system remained to our south most of the day in the Gulf of Mexico. Just before sunset, another system passed just to our north by a couple of miles, bringing over 7 inches of rain to that area, causing flash flooding and water overflowing onto the roads. By Wednesday, with two days of bright sunshine, the lawn still has standing water in low places and is growing and spreading fast. Fledgling cardinals are starting to visit the feeding table late in the day. There have been more than enough little sparrows hanging around eating everything they see.
