Description:
Fire danger is low, however, we are - due to forecasts of a hot dry summer because of EL Nino - preparing for an annoying fire season in the months to come. This past week we got enough rain to give us a positive water balance for the month. Hoping it was just in time to help the young trees that were putting out new growth and just beginning to struggle. My early strawberries came out shaped like a shrew's head (a tapered tip). I suspect due to drying as the berries were forming. Several species of grass are in bloom, and my nose has noticed. Clovers are in bloom. I think some robins have fledged already, as I saw what appeared to be a family group foraging together yesterday. The violet-green swallows are nesting, and daddy swallow is doing a fine job of catching our mosquitoes. Vegetables are growing well. They needed to be watered last week, but this week's rain obviously pleased them. Rubus ursinus has a good crop on, and some are beginning to show ripening. Thimbleberries are still growing. Roses are blooming pretty heavily, and the snowball bush is ready for our annual snowball fight over a week earlier than usual. The dogwood blossoms are fading. Rosemary is in bloom, and sage is budding. Bleeding hearts, claytonias, waterleafs, phacelias, miterworts, weedy geraniums, and more are blooming on the forest floor. This week's rain has resulted in quite a number of toadstools and mushrooms popping up. The trees have been dropping their moss, due to the past dry weeks, but the moss on the trees is now greening again. People have been enjoying Estacada Lake lately. The creek is low, but somewhat noisy this week. Soil was pretty dry on top at the beginning of the week, but is now quite damp.
