So far this month, the total of 0.33" of rainfall has been a blessing but inadequate to turn our drought around. Windy conditions and warm temperatures continue to compound the drying effect. The ground remains extremely hard and dry. Pastures are green, but spot checks in the fields and yard reveal many areas with brown dessicated grass blades and alarmingly large bare spaces between plants--not at all the normal for Spring in our area. Ground that was worked in preparation for planting is now "on hold" until Fall in hopes of adequate precipitation then so the seed isn't wasted for lack of rainfall. More ponds show scum and mud rings at or near the surface. Our wet-weather branches still haven't run since early last Spring. Hay and fescue seed crops look to be significantly lower than normal this year.
