Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: MT-LY-2
Station Name: Chester 0.3 ESE
Report Date: 5/11/2026
Submitted: 5/11/2026 11:10 AM
Scale Bar: Severely Dry
Description:
Pretty dire straits here in Liberty County due to:
Lack of winter snow.
Low soil moisture
Unusual number of high wind events and blowing dust/dirt events
Late hard freezes after early record warmth

We had 8 days with wind gusts over 40 mph during March and April.  This along with declining soil moisture set up blowing dust/dirt episodes, especially on fields that previously had very little stubble such as lentil crops. In some areas the ditches were more than half full with blown dirt.  The pastures and dry land hay fields that require normal snowpack and April moisture are showing lackluster growth.

From April 19-22, we had temperatures in the 70s to lower 80s.  A record high temperature was set in Joplin.  This was followed by hard freezes April 25-29 and record lows of 10 to 15 degrees on April 27.  Another hard freeze and record lows between 15 and 19 degrees occurred on May 6.  Due to low soil moisture, the winter wheat that was stunted by the extreme cold, is not recovering.
