Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: IL-BN-19
Station Name: Belvidere 5.0 NNW
Report Date: 5/9/2026
Submitted: 5/09/2026 8:06 AM
Scale Bar: Mildly Dry
Description:
Well, the familiar dry pattern is back, as this area received a grand total of only 0.05" of rain over the week and just 0.66" over the last 3 weeks. Also, our NWS forecast has little rain for the next several days. Fortunately, temps have been decidedly on the cool side, so soil evaporation has been limited. Area waterways are close to their normal levels and continue to slowly drop. Deeper soil is still wet enough but it is drying out nonetheless. With little rain in sight, gonna go with mildly dry for now. Trees are leafing out quite a bit with the usual stragglers catching up. Area lawns look a lighter green and are growing slower now. Additional signs of stress are becoming visible, with the surface getting dry, hard and cracked. Also, while area farmers pick up the pace of cultivating, a lot of dust is getting kicked up in the process. Similar to last year, a couple of geese decided that hanging out along (and on) our busy road was where they wanted to be. Their demise seemed inevitable but thankfully on my return trip I found that they had not only survived but moved to a much safer spot. Drivers must have been careful to avoid hitting them since they were really at risk. And the lowly mosquitoes are back, albeit in small numbers so far. One met it's ultimate fate after landing on my window. I wonder if there'll be more.
