After .45" of rain, the total for April is 1.08", which is still over 2" below average for the month. The rain and some warm weather did kickstart the St. Augustine grass into greening up. Prior to the rain, the sage in some fields was wilting (see photo) and is small for this time of year. It is starting to flower. Azaleas were also wilting. Corn and early soybeans got a small boost from the rain and are now a few inches tall. Porpoises have been seen in the Albemarle Sound the past few days which is an indicator of higher than normal salinity levels. Birds are continuing to use the birdbath for drinking and bathing. Surface soil moisture has increased slightly with the rain and cooler weather, but there was no standing water in the yard after the rain.
