We’re currently under a Statewide Burn Ban from SC Forestry Commission. No rain since 4-6 Apr (0.06”). Previous to this was 17 Mar (0.72”). Currently 88 wildfires across SC. US Drought Monitor still showing us in a D1 - Moderate Drought. Non-irrigated lawns and roadside vegetation brown and crunchy. Roadside swamps and some in-town retention ponds mostly dry. Roadside ditches dry with brown vegetation. Local fields and pastures starting to turn from green to brown. Today (18 Apr) at Poinsett State Park the forest floor is very dry, with dry soil below the leaves/pine needles. Some small tributaries that were running a couple weeks ago now totally dried up. The stream running from the park lake’s main spillway is down considerably from a month ago. See the attached photos from 20 Mar and 18 Apr (today). Many more streambed rocks are now visible than a month ago, with the photos taken from the same spot. No mosquitos at all in the park today. Birds and squirrels still actively working the feeders and suet blocks, while frequently visiting the fountains. From Data Explorer: 0.06” rain in April (-1.83”/3% of normal); for the Year: 6.04” (-6.37”/49% of normal). Last 30 days: 0.06” (NOAA normal: 6.70”); Last 90 days: 5.81” (NOAA normal: 13.67”. Quite a rain deficit. Looking forward to possible rain tomorrow (20% chance).
