Despite having 3.76” of rain this month, it is still not normal. Only the lowest (boggiest) spots are too moist to drive through.
Most ponds are full at least and the cracks that were starting in March have closed.
The soil is moist but I’m having to water some shallow-rooted garden plants between rains. I cannot till - the top is dry enough in the garden to work but it’s too moist for anything mechanical. I haven’t seen any fieldwork near here since March.
Since my last report, the pastures have exploded. Everything tender that the frost got has come back and ALL the trees are leafed - Pecans still blooming and Cypresses lagging but they’re probably half-way to being full.
Fescue and some ryegrass is blooming and bromes and orchard grass have seeded.
Despite everything seeming to be early, seasonal birds are right on time - Scissortails were 10 days later than 2023 (haven’t checked the record for the last 2 years). A dove or maybe a mockingbird is nesting in a large Privet near my driveway - only saw it from the corner of my eye at dusk so no judgement please.
Lightning beetles are here for over a week, dragonflies, 2weeks.
Paper wasps are well into their nesting but no dirt-daubers yet. Lots of butterflies! Earthworms really got active this last week. And I saw a bat. Springtime!
