After a prolonged period of "Extreme Drought" and a fairly snowy winter, the ground was so dry that when the snow pack melted away, there was so little water penetration that here in Northern New England, there was no "mud season". In fact, the snows that we received during the winter were particularly low in SWE. The ground currently is somewhat moist at the top 1/2 inch then dry from there down. We need more rain now that the frost is out of the ground. The snow runoff from the mountains did not produce the usual "Spring flooding" that usually occurs here.
