Snow event earlier this week with 12cm snowfall, followed by 5 days with daytime temperatures above freezing (finally!). New snow melted within a few days, and 6mm of rain over the past two days have decreased the snowpack significantly. Remaining snow is crystalline. Roadways are bare and muddy, and approximately 20% of my property is bare ground, mostly in forested areas. Southern-exposed roofs are now clear of snow. Moss and grass are greening as the snow dissipates, although the ground is frozen solid. Water run-off and melt is present over the lake ice, and snowmachines were out on the weekend, ploughing through the water. Redpolls, absent this winter, are now at the feeder. Gulls returned last week, the day before the snowfall. Before the rain, bush trails were hard-packed and easily walkable. Birches are flowering. Feels like a wet spring.
