The week started with much above average high temperatures with a high temperature this week of 87 degrees on March 30. The high fire danger warning and red flag warning continued as the ground and vegetation continue to dry out. A strong cold front pushed temperatures to below normal late April 1 with the first meaningful rainfall since January 8. I received 1.95 inches of rain from late April 1 to early April 3. The soil is wet at the surface and 3 inches down. The grass has greened up and trees and shrubs are also greening up. Conditions are mildly dry. March precipitation totaled only 0.55 inch (1.31 inch below normal, or 30 percent of normal). April rainfall is 1.96 inches, 1.43 inches above normal (368 percent of normal). Precipitation here for the year is now 4.36 inch, which is 0.19 inch above normal (104 percent of normal). Precipitation for the water year is 1.31 inch below normal (86 percent of normal). Plants and wildlife. Bird visits to the heated bird bath remained steady early this week due to the limited sources of water, but visits have declined substantially with the recent rainfall. Approximately 15 species of birds (about 100 birds visit each day). Water Supply Water level in Standing Bear Lake (approximately 0.2 mile to the east of here) has improved to near normal.
