Moderately Dry due to rain deficit. SC Forestry app shows 32 wildfires across SC today. Last rain (0.72”) on 17 Mar; previous to this was 28 Feb (0.09”). US Drought Monitor now showing us in a D1 - Moderate Drought condition. A few widely scattered light showers today, but not enough to wet the ground. Most local roadside swamps and ditches dry. Hiking at Poinsett State Park this week (Wed and Fri) showed dry leaf litter/pine needles, and the soil underneath has gone from damp last week to nearly dry this week. The park lake’s main spillway is probably about 3/4 of last week’s flow (photo); creek rocks below the spillway that were fully submerged last week are about half exposed this week. Small streams that were flowing last week are nearly dried up this week (photos). The two seeps below the Coquina trail that merged to form a small creek a couple weeks ago are now barely flowing (photo). Honeysuckle bushes and holly trees are blooming in the park, but last week appears to have been the dogwood peak bloom, as many dogwood petals are now on the ground. Many less grey squirrels in the park this week as compared to last week. Many yellow/black and black/blue butterflies in the park. More mosquitoes out and about. Shank’s creek feeding the park lake seems to be down about a quarter from last week’s flow, judging by more exposed mud. Low areas along the Laurel Trail that were flowing freely last week are now still, stagnant and covered with green algae. Resurrection Ferns dry, grey and curled.
