Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: MS-HR-57
Station Name: Gulfport 2.6 WSW
Report Date: 3/23/2026
Submitted: 3/23/2026 6:19 AM
Scale Bar: Moderately Dry
Description:
There has been no rain since the previous Sunday and no rain in the forecast for the week. While it is not as dry as would be if this were summer, the ground is not as wet as it should be during spring. Most concerning is that the ephemeral pond that usually consumes the city lot next door has disappeared (ground is moist, but no standing water). This is the breading ground for our population of frogs, toads, and other creatures.
This week I only watered a few locations where I planted seeds. However, I plan to water other areas on Monday because I have many new plants in the ground.
I raise shoreline grasses in a raised bed that is lined and filled with water. The birds have been utilizing this area as their bird bath.
In my pictures, I have included my escavation site. I planned to build a pond, rain garden, and dry creek bed to address ongoing drainage issues in the backyard. Unfortonuately, I uncovered an old cesspit/septic tank. Groundwater is draining to this area, and it will take me sometime to escavate it, figure out how to deal with the old cesspit, then build the pond. In the meantime, it gives a nice, exposed shot of the soil conditions for several feet. This is the low area of my property.

This was my first time doing a soil moisture test. At 0-2", soil moisture was 16.2% and deeper- 18.5%. According to quick search, this seems low for mississippi area.
