Description:
Though we had rather a lot of rain in a few days last week, it was not so severe as the previous flood event earlier this year. The creek only came up about a foot, and with drier days over the weekend, it is dropping again. The local rivers look almost full and muddy. I had to take a detour early Saturday morning due to a flooded roadway, however, by that afternoon, no signs of the morning flood remained, not only was the foot of water gone, but the road looked dry. My lawn is looking very lush indeed. Fire danger is low, and backyard burning season is open. I feared that all my piles of debris might be wet enough from last weeks rains to result in a very smoky fire, but that was not the case, they burned relatively cleanly. The soil is pretty soft and muddy. I've had a flock of chickens penned up in my garden, and they have raked probably a couple wheelbarrows full of small rocks to the surface. Birds are nesting. Territorial calls are down, and birds are being rather more sneaky. Daffodils, Spanish bells, grape hyacinths, and Lenten roses continue to bloom, and the forsythia has the best bloom I have ever seen. There is a good supply of young stinging nettles sprouting up in the forest, and chickweed, red dead nettle, mouse ear cress, and bittercress are all mature and in full bloom - even a few dandelions are blooming. Chickens are laying at above 90%.
I've been seeing quite a few moths in the evenings and pre-dawn hours. Some spiderlings turned up floating in my rain gauge this week. (I thought that was supposed to be a fall event) New leaves are emerging on the blackberries. I've transplanted some trees and shrubs. The red alders and hazelnuts have elongated catkins now - I haven't checked for pollen, but I notice some people seem to have itchy, runny, noses.
