Thunderstorms bringing two separate half-inch rains in the past week were welcome, but still a disappointment when multiple inches were forecast. Big rain events in this region either underperform or shift east with remarkable consistency, especially early in the season. Little change since last report. Interestingly, red oaks in creek valley below us are a couple weeks behind the red oaks up higher in leafing out. Presumably this is because our last widespread freeze was on Feb 1, but low-lying drainage areas saw a decent frost on Feb 23.
Some live oaks are spreading catkins and pollen already, but most are still growing them, and pollen levels are not high yet. Hackberries and elms are still leafless. Birds are active and loud, especially Chickadees and Bewick's Wrens. First hummingbird appearance on the 11th. Burn ban remains on.
