March 2 - 10, 2026: A total of 0.87" rain during this period-- 0.8" measured on March 5 after an evening to morning steady rain. Temperatures have been normal or higher than normal for this time of the year, nearly 60°F for a daytime high on March 8th. Beginning yesterday, March 9th, a cooler weather front has been moving through the area with overnight low temps in the low to mid 30's. Golden current bushes have leaves and yellow flowers, one of the earliest shrubs to bloom each year. Crocus and a few forsythia are in bloom. Crown imperial fritillaria stalks poked above ground a few days ago and are growing rapidly. The apricot tree across the street is in full bloom....MUCH too early for a fruit tree! In recent years this apricot tree blooms in late March or the first week of April, and most years the blooms are killed by brief April cold snaps. Now it's in full bloom by the first week of March. Honey bees are visiting the crocus and will be busy on golden current flowers. Maples and a few other early leafing trees are full of seed flowers. All the plants and trees are waking up weeks earlier than usual this year. Very little or no snow on highest elevations of the nearby foothills. At 7,582 ft., nearby Shafer Butte peak above the Bogus Basin ski area still has a light coating of snow from the storm system that moved through in the middle of last week. Snow is melting fast. Sandhill cranes should be migrating over the area soon. The Anna's hummingbird is using the sugar water feeders and catching insects in the warmer weather. Other birds are very active at the seed feeders. Reservoirs in the upper Boise River system are very full for this time of year as snowmelt and precip runoff are being held back to meet summer irrigation needs. An interesting late winter this year. Normal precipitation but unusually little snow in higher elevations.
