Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: SC-SM-30
Station Name: Sumter 1.1 SSW
Report Date: 3/6/2026
Submitted: 3/06/2026 9:57 AM
Scale Bar: Near Normal
Description:
We’re in a “Near Normal” condition since the last report (24 Feb), but overall seem to still be in a “Mildly Dry” condition. The Drought Monitor still has our area in a “D1 - Moderate Drought” status. SC Forestry App shows 12 wildfires across the state. Poinsett State Park hike in the last few days had bright green Resurrection Ferns, damp soil immediately below the dry leaf litter/pine needles and smaller streams flowing well. Roadside swamps holding a bit of water, but seem to be quickly draining over a couple days’ time. Some roadside ditches holding water, but it also seems to be quickly draining/being absorbed. Both Wateree and Congaree rivers are down from full, but not abnormally low with clear water. Birds and squirrels still very active at the feeders, even as local plants and trees are budding and blooming. Cedar Waxwings have been been visiting to eat the River Birch buds. The River Birch trees definitely have their sap running, as you’ll get wet if standing under them. Yellow Pine pollen is really starting to show on everything. Mosquitos are starting to become a nuisance again, and the fire ants have grown wings and are swarming. Since last report on 24 Feb we’ve had 1.44” rain, plus one Trace reading. From Data Explorer: 0.0” precip in Mar (-0.69”/0% of normal), 4.87” for the year (-2.79”/64% of normal). Last 30 days: 3.06” (NOAA normal: 6.91”). Last 90 days: 5.94” (NOAA normal: 14.16”). From these numbers we may actually be in a “Moderately Dry” condition for the recent past, even with our recent precip.
