Near normal in the Sumter area, but last week at Huntington Beach State Park the Sandpiper Trail pond was down a foot or two with the pond edge’s mud cracking. At Poinsett State Park late last week the smaller streams are still flowing with Resurrection Ferns unfurled and still bright green (see picture). Poinsett’s leaf litter and pine needles on the ground are dry, with the soil underneath being moist. This past Saturday the Wateree River is well down within its banks, but the Congaree in Columbia is near the top of its banks. Both are running clear, not muddy. SC Forestry app shows 14 wildfires across SC. Local roadside swamps are low, roadside ditches are dry. 1.62” rain in Feb, 3.43” for the year. Both about 50% of normal. 0.40” rain the last week; NOAA normal is 3.36 for the period. Cold and windy today, with RH at 34%. Here at home the birds and squirrels are staying busy at the feeders.
