Still Moderately Dry, and the US Drought Monitor is showing us in a D1 (Moderate Drought) condition. SC Forestry app showing 15 fires across SC. Only a Trace of rain this past week, but the weekend snowstorm dropped 3.75” of fluffy snow. This storm total Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) was 0.32” water. The Snowfall Snow to Liquid Ratio (SLR) was 12:1, but this measurement was taken after the snow ended, so some settling and melting probably occurred, which would probably make the actual SLR a bit higher. The actual snow depth may have been a bit higher, as the temp during the early snow showers was exactly 32 deg, and noticed a bit of snow melt then, plus some settling before the depth measurement was taken. Birds and squirrels very busy at the feeders with the last two weekends’ ice and snow storms, plus the below normal temps. Not able to make any hikes the past week, looking forward to getting back out. One good thing with the cold temps is no mosquitos. From Data Explorer: For Feb: -0.36” or 0% of Normal; For the year: -2.16” or 46% of normal. Last 30 Days: 1.66” (NOAA Normal: 6.97”). Last 90 Days: 4.72” (NOAA Normal: 14.42). So it appears that we’re a few inches below normal in the recent past, which checks with the US Drought Monitor. We still have quite a bit of snow on the house and in the yard, and local Sumter streets still have many icy spots in the shaded areas. Today’s much warmer temps and the coming rain should help clear those within a couple days.
