Station Number: SC-SM-30
Station Name: Sumter 1.1 SSW
Report Date: 1/20/2026
Submitted: 1/20/2026 10:01 AM
Scale Bar: Moderately Dry
Description:
0.94” this past week, but still Moderately Dry due to the long dry spell. Drought Monitor shows us in a D0 - Abnormally Dry condition, with D1 conditions close by. SC Forestry app shows 17 fires across SC. Last week’s Poinsett State Park hikes showed main streams (spring fed) running but low. Smaller streams either dry or a small trickle. Park staff recently did a major project cleaning the main and waterfall spillways, but beavers have already dammed the waterfall spillway, leaving only a trickle. The main spillway is running, but a bit low. Leaf litter and pine needles dry. Soil in the park was dry down to 1” in some places, while damp in other spots. Resurrection ferns dry, grey and curled. Local roadside swamps holding a little water, but not much. Roadside ditches dry. From Data Explorer: Jan total precip is 1.15” (-1.18” or 49% of normal). Last 30 days is 1.16” vs NOAA normal of 7.25” for the same period. Last 90 days precip total is 7.06” vs NOAA normal of 13.52”. So still quite dry compared to normal. Birds and squirrels very active at the feeders, with usually about 20 Baltimore Orioles fighting over the grape jelly.
