Station Name: Belvidere 5.0 NNW
Report Date: 1/17/2026
Submitted: 1/17/2026 10:27 AM
Scale Bar: Near Normal
Description:
We had 0.26" of precip over the week including 0.21" SWE from 2.4" of snow. Our unusually warm temperatures were sent packing early Wednesday morning by a strong cold front accompanied by high winds and some light snow. Winter has returned. Local waterways are looking good with the nearby Beaver Creek running a bit on the high side for the first time in a while. So it seems near normal soil conditions will remain. The ground is currently white from the recent snow and wildlife remains on the quiet side although I did see a deer near my house. They must be getting hungry. And another bald eagle was seen this week. As kids we rarely if ever saw them anywhere, from the lakes of northern Minnesota to the rivers and creeks of northern Illinois. Fortunately back then, our experts managed to get DDT banned, saving our eagles from possible extinction. Presently their numbers continue to increase and seeing them is almost a weekly occurrence. And now whenever they're seen, it's just plain awesome, every time.
