Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: VA-RNC-3
Station Name: Roanoke 1.9 SSW
Report Date: 1/15/2026
Submitted: 1/15/2026 11:18 AM
Scale Bar: Mildly Dry
Description:
Station precipitation for the first half of January is at 1.47" due entirely to an all rain event January 10-11, just slightly below normal for the period. The water year (Oct. 1-Jan. 15) still shows a substantial deficit (-4.98") with only 5.91" or 54% of normal precipitation over the period.

Hydrologic indicators have showed a very small improvement due to the recent rain event. The USGS gage on the Roanoke River at Roanoke 7-day flow (as of 1/14) was up slightly to 180 cfs or the 22nd percentile of all flows for the date (63% of median) and in Below Nornal category (10th to 24th percentile). Carvins Cove local water supply reservoir (as of 1/15) dropped to -10.7 feet below full pond (74.2% of capacity) -0.5 ft. fall (about half of the previous 2-week drop) in the past two weeks. The US Drought Monitor (USDM) map valid as of 1/13/26 shows Moderate Drought conditions (D1) across most of western VA and Severe Drought (D2) just east of the Roanoke area in most of central and northern VA. NWS CPC issued a La Niña Advisory in October and La Niña remains present but not very robust in the tropical Pacific with a 3-month Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) of -0.5 for the OND 3-month period.

On the fence about showing an improvement to the Mildly Dry category. But will be optimistic given several longer range (up to week 3-4) CPC outlooks favoring chances of above normal precipitation in the Mid-Atlantic.
